We now know the name of the suspect involved in an incident where a Howard County sheriff’s deputy lost his life while serving a warrant. He is 25-year-old Evan Dorsey, who was wanted on a warrant out of Clinton County for failure to appear.  Indiana State Police officials confirmed that 27-year-old Deputy Carl Koontz was shot and later died while serving that warrant in Russiaville early Sunday morning.  He was a three-year veteran of the force, married with an eight-month-old son. Sergeant Jordan Buckley was also shot. He’s a nine-year veteran of the department. He is in stable condition. Both officers were taken to I.U.-Methodist Hospital, here in Indianapolis and it’s there that Koontz died from his injuries. The gunman, Dorsey, was also killed in this incident. An autopsy will determine if he died from a self-inflicted wound or if he was hit when the deputies, Koontz and Buckley, returned fire. Koontz’s body will be escorted from the hospital in a motorcade back to Howard County to the city of Kokomo later today at 2 p.m. Indiana Governor Mike Pence ordered flags at all state facilities be immediately flown at half-staff in Koontz’s honor until sunset on the day of his funeral.

Indianapolis metro police are looking for a man they say shot at an officer here in the city. It happened at 38th Street and Sherman Drive on the northeast side late Sunday night. IMPD commanders aren’t saying much to reporters at this time about this incident, only that they’re continuing to look for a suspect.

A man wanted for attempted murder in the shooting of a metro police officer here in the city is now behind bars. Indianapolis metro police aren’t looking any more for this guy and think they have their man. They report Michael Swafford was taken into custody Saturday night at a gas station on Kentucky Avenue.  Swafford was wanted for the March 8th shootout that slightly injured IMPD Officer Christopher Maher. Maher sustained injuries from the flying glass when Swafford allegedly shot out the windows of his patrol car. Officials say when Swafford was arrested, he had with him a handgun and drugs.

The investigation will continue today in to a massive blaze at a truck stop on the city’s southwest side.  Fire crews say there’s at least $2 million in damage after a three alarm fire at the Flying J.  That truck stop complex also housed a Denny’s restaurant. Fire investigators said it took over 100 firefighters to fight the blaze Sunday evening. Smoke could be seen for miles. Investigators hope to get to the scene later today to determine a cause. There are no injuries reported.

Indiana Senator Dan Coats voted for President Obama’s pick for the U.S. Supreme Court 20 years ago, but Coats says that doesn’t mean he’ll support Merrick Garland this time around. Coats, along with just about every Republican senator, says the next president should nominate a successor to late-Justice Antonin Scalia. Coats is one of seven Republicans who voted for Garland when he was nominated to the D.C. appeals court in 1997.

National Headlines…

President  Barack Obama’s history-making state visit to Cuba rolls on. President Obama will continue his tour of Havana today and meet with President Raul Castro, before attending a state dinner tonight at the Revolutionary Palace. Obama arrived in Havana Sunday afternoon with First Lady Michelle Obama, their family, and several business leaders—most notably ones from Xerox, Marriott and Starwood. With this visit, President Obama became the first sitting American president to step foot on Cuban soil since 1928. The last sitting American president to do so was Calvin Coolidge.

The race for the White House continues on Tuesday with nominating contests across three more states. Democrats and Republicans will cast votes in Arizona’s primary and Utah’s caucuses. Democratic voters will caucus in Idaho. Here in Indiana, make sure you’re registered to vote before the May primary. Registration deadline is April 4.

Hundreds of rabbis, Jewish professionals and voters are planning a protest against Donald Trump today. They plan to silently walk out when the GOP frontrunner takes the stage at the American Israel Public Affairs Committee conference. The AIPAC conference is the largest pro-Israel policy gathering of the year and has long been considered a key stop for politicians.
