Madame C.J.Walker a Civil Rights Activist, Philanthropist, and Entrepreneur, was born in Louisiana, but left a lasting legacy in Indiana.
Madame Walker invented a line of African American hair care products in 1905, and eventually established the Madame C.J. Walker Laboratories to manufacture her products.
In 1910 Madam C.J. Walker set up a laboratory in Indianapolis.
Madam Walker was an exceptional philanthropist and gave back to the Indianapolis community. She contributed to building a local YMCA, and the Flanner House, to name a few.
Madam Walker’s legacy can still be felt in Indianapolis. It is seen and felt at the Madam Walker Theater Center, which was constructed in 1927 and is now on the National register of Historic Places.
