Get In the Know With Kim’s Thursday News & Sports Headlines

Indiana’s farewell plans for one of its past leaders gets underway today. Good day to you…

Final goodbyes are being prepared for former Indiana Governor Edgar Whitcomb.  Ceremonies begin Thursday afternoon with an honor guard in the Statehouse rotunda, where the public can sign their condolences. On Friday, a funeral cortege will travel from the Indiana War Memorial to the Statehouse, where a public memorial service will begin at noon in the rotunda.

Police officials say an officer with the Indianapolis Metro Police Department was seriously injured in a crash Wednesday night.  The crash happened at the intersection of Kessler Boulevard and Grandview Drive on the city’s northwest side just before midnight. The officer was taken to the hospital in serious condition, but his injuries are not believed to be life-threatening.  The woman who was driving the other vehicle and T-boned him was reportedly uninjured.

A teacher at North Central High School is in hot water. He’s accused of having an online relationship with a 16-year-old girl from Oregon. Court documents indicate that Sameer Girish Thakar admitted to police that he had Skype conversations with the girl and that he identified printouts of sexual images he sent her. The Fishers Police Department got the call about Thakar from the FBI who has him listed as a possible suspect in another Oregon-related case in 2014.

Been keeping your eye on those potholes trying to dodge them out there across the city?  The Department of Public Works is fixing potholes this week.  Ten crews hit the streets on Wednesday applying temporary patches to some of the city’s larger potholes. As it gets warmer, the DPW will begin applying a more permanent patch to the holes. The department is asking residents to report potholes when they find them so they can be filled.

National…

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton will try to regain her footing tonight in the latest Democratic presidential debate with Vermont Senator Bernie Sanders. While she narrowly beat Sanders in the Iowa Caucus, Sanders handily beat her in the nation’s first primary, held in New Hampshire. Tonight’s debate will be hosted by PBS at 9 p.m. Eastern and will be simulcast on CNN.

And if you’re keeping score, the field of Republican presidential candidates continues to slim down. New Jersey Governor Chris Christie suspended his campaign Wednesday and businesswoman Carly Fiorina officially dropped out of the race.

The last four protesters occupying an Oregon wildlife refuge are planning to end their standoff today. They say they’ll turn themselves in. The FBI reportedly moved in on the Malheur National Wildlife Refuge Wednesday evening. Meantime, the father of group leaders Ammon and Ryan Bundy has been arrested. Nevada rancher Cliven Bundy was taken into custody Wednesday night at Portland International Airport. The occupiers are to be escorted from the refuge by Nevada Assemblywoman Michele Fiore and Reverend Franklin Graham, the son of evangelist Billy Graham.

In Sports…

The Hornets took a 17-point halftime lead and held on to drop the Pacers, Wednesday night 117-95 at home.  Paul George led the Pacers with 22 points, but poor defense was their doom. George Hill added 12 points in the loss. The Pacers head into the All-Star break at 28-and-25 on the season and are off until next Friday night.

Colts quarterback Andrew Luck is in line for a huge payday. Colts owner Jim Irsay has said Luck’s new contract will likely start at a minimum of $20 million per season. The fifth-year quarterback is entering the final year of his rookie deal, which will pay him a little more than $16 million. Luck missed nine games with injury in 2015, finishing with 15 touchdown passes and 12 interceptions.

Weather…

A polar vortex is about to send much of the Northeastern part of the country into a deep freeze. The mercury will be plunging below zero in some areas of the Northeast this weekend. It’s part of a mass of cold air from Canada barreling down on the East Coast.  The temperatures could be as much as 30 degrees colder than earlier this week. Indy is likely to feel more of a chill this weekend as well.

Generally sunny in Indy on this Throwback Thursday. High: 26 degrees.

Finally…

Congratulations to Indiana Fever star Tamika Catchings. Catchings has gotten married. She posted a picture to her social media feeds showing herself in a flowing white dress on the court at Bankers Life Fieldhouse, holding a basketball above her head with husband Parnell Smith watching closely in a defensive stance. Catchings and Smith were married on Sunday in a private ceremony at the Skyline Club.
