Veterans Day is here. Today we stop to honor the men and women who have devoted their time with military service in our United States Armed Forces.
Federal and state government offices are closed today. The offices of the City of Indianapolis are open, however many–but not all–of the county offices are closed, so call ahead. The courts, license branches, most banks, and the public library are all closed for the day. Trash pick-up will continue on this holiday, however there will be no mail collection or delivery. Post office branches are closed. If you’re taking public transportation to get around the metro area, IndyGo buses are operating on a regular schedule.
Parade and More! One of the places you may want to go today, is to one of the many Veterans Day observation events in the area. A Veterans Day Celebration will be held at 10:30 a.m. in downtown Indy at the Indiana War Memorial. Another ceremony will be held a short time later at 11 a.m. on the steps of the Beech Grove City Hall. The annual Veterans Day Parade will kick off at 11:45 a.m. downtown at Michigan and Pennsylvania Streets. The parade will travel on a southern route on Pennsylvania to New York Street, then west to Meridian Street and will head north finishing at North Street. Those moving around downtown should give themselves extra time due to blocked streets because of the parade.
Veterans Day also means deals. Just planning to grab a meal today or spend time shopping? Many retailers and restaurants are offering deals and steep discounts to honor veterans. From a free entree at Bru Burger’s locations both downtown and in Carmel, to a free car wash at Crew Carwash until 9 p.m. tonight, to a free lunch at Indiana Grand Racing and Casino from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., and other freebies at places like City Barbeque, Dunkin’ Donuts and Scotty’s Brewhouse and so many more, you can find something to suit your foodie or shopping tastes after showing proof of military service. The folks at themilitarywallet.com have compiled a great list of discounts, CLICK HERE to see the deals.
There are more than 23 million veterans and over 1.3 million active duty military service members right now fighting for our freedom. Happy Veterans Day to each one of you! Thanks for your service.
