Former Indiana state representative William “Bill” Crawford has died at the age of 79, according to the Indiana House Democratic Caucus.

Crawford was a longtime member of the Indiana House of Representatives serving from 1972 through 2012, when he retired. Crawford was Indiana’s longest serving African-American legislator representing the 98th District in Indianapolis. He rose to lead the powerful House Ways and Means Committee of the state legislature during his public service.

Crawford was instrumental in the founding and leadership of Indiana Black Expo, Inc. and Circle City Classic, an event that is underway this weekend.

As more details become available, we will keep you updated.  Again, an influential leader of this Indianapolis community and a lion of the Black Indianapolis community, Bill Crawford, has died today at the age of 79.
