Indianapolis metro police have taken a motorist into custody Monday morning that was involved in a police chase that began around 5 a.m. when IUPUI police tried to do a routine traffic stop near the downtown campus. That suspect took off and fled the scene. With police in hot pursuit, the chase went through Speedway, returned downtown and proceeded northbound on Meridian Street until the car hit police stop sticks. The scene closed south and north-bound Meridian Street at 49th Street for a while during Monday’s rush. However, that thoroughfare has since reopened.
Water is back on and access to the roadway is now available in another stretch of downtown Indy. Citizens Energy says aging infrastructure is what caused a water main break on Ohio Street Sunday. It caused steam to rise from several manholes. No explosion occurred, however, one person near the steaming manholes was treated for difficulty breathing.

Madison County health officials say a syringe exchange program there is off to a slow start. It’s aimed at slowing the spread of hepatitis C. They say in the first month, three people have signed up and 54 needles were exchanged.
Organizers of Indy’s Greek Festival say the weekend’s event was one of their most successful. They’re guessing it drew at least 15,000 guests. They say great weather definitely helped with the turnout. It wrapped Sunday evening.
The rape trial starts today for former Indianapolis Colts player Josh McNary. He’s accused of raping a woman after a night of drinking at a downtown bar. The former linebacker is charged with rape, criminal confinement, and battery in connection with the incident last winter.
The father of one of the TV news employees killed on live television is vowing to memorialize her by bringing sensible gun control to the country. On CNN’s “State of the Union,” Andy Parker said those who dismiss shootings as a mental health problem are ignoring the real issue. The father of WDBJ reporter Alison Parker pointed to a California law addressing gun sales and mental health checks, saying he believes it could have saved his daughter’s life
President Obama is changing the name of the tallest mountain in North America. The President will restore Alaska’s Mount McKinley to its Native American name, Denali, when he begins a three-day visit today. The White House says Obama is renaming the peak to improve relations with Native Americans.

As he closes in on frontrunner Hillary Clinton, Bernie Sanders wants more debates in the Democratic primary. On CNN’s “State of the Union,” the Vermont Senator said the party needs to engage voters, especially younger ones. Sanders suggested his rise in the polls is because Democrats are coming to see he is better suited to take on billionaires’ control of the economy.
An investigation is underway after the death of an inmate in Virginia. Jamycheal Mitchell’s death has sparked outrage after he was discovered dead in his cell on August 19 in the Hampton Roads Regional Jail. Mitchell had been jailed since April without bail for allegedly stealing about five-dollars worth of groceries. Mitchell’s family says he had a history of mental health problems. Prison officials say his death was of national causes and that the 24-year-old had no outward signs of injury.

Well-known horror film director Wes Craven is dead at the age of 76. The “Hollywood Reporter” says Craven died at his Los Angeles home after suffering from brain cancer. His many credits include the “A Nightmare on Elm Street” films featuring the iconic character Freddy Krueger. Actress Angela Bassett who worked with Craven on many projects including “Vampire In Brooklyn” tweeted, ”I feel blessed to have worked with him. He always invited me to the table, and for that I am grateful @wescraven.”
The best-selling self-help author Dr. Wayne Dyer has also died. Dyer’s family announced his death Sunday with a post on his Facebook page, writing that “Wayne has left his body, passing away through the night.” While a cause of death hasn’t been revealed, NBC News reported Dyer was diagnosed with leukemia back in 2009, however, he said he’d treated it with positive thinking and exercise. Dyer, a favorite also on Oprah Winfrey’s OWN Network made an impact on the media titan. She took to Twitter to mourn him, saying it was “always a pleasure” to talk about life’s big questions. The self-improvement guru was age 75.

Tennis’ final major of the year begins today with first-round play at the U.S. Open. Serena Williams and Marin Cilic are the defending women’s and men’s champions respectively. The top-seeded Williams is looking to complete a calendar grand slam after winning the Australian Open, French Open and Wimbledon earlier this year. Williams takes on No. 86 seeded Vitalia Diatchenko of Russia live at 7 p.m. ET.

The “Deflategate” scandal continues today in a New York courtroom. New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady will be in U.S. District Court for a hearing about his four game suspension over allegations he was involved in intentionally underinflating footballs used in the AFC Championship Game against the Indianapolis Colts earlier this year. The judge in the case could rule on the legality of the NFL’s punishment.
Japan overcame a big early deficit to beat Pennsylvania 18-11 in the Little League World Series championship game Sunday. Japan belted five home runs en route to its fourth title in six years. The U.S. champions from the Red Land Little League in Lewisberry, Pennsylvania were outscored 16-1 over the final five innings in the highest-scoring game in Little League history.

Much of South and Central Florida is under a flood watch as the remnants of Tropical Storm Erika hit the region. The majority of the state is expected to get heavy rains this morning as the storm moves northward into parts of the southeastern U.S. including Georgia. What’s left of the storm is expected to pack heavy rains and possible tornadoes.
There’s some cloudiness early today in Indy, with scattered showers and storms rolling across the area this afternoon. Keep your umbrellas handy. Monday’s high: 88 degrees.
Finally…
Nicki Minaj opened the MTV Video Music Awards Sunday night and later had words with the show’s host Miley Cyrus. Kanye West later gave a 15-minute acceptance speech after being presented with the Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award, then announced he’d be running for president in 2020. However, Taylor Swift walked away the night’s big winner.
