The Prairie View, Texas road where Sandra Bland was pulled over and arrested by a state trooper is being named after her. City council members in Prairie View approved a resolution Tuesday renaming University Boulevard to “Sandra Bland Parkway.” Bland’s name will stay for up to five years on the road that leads to her alma mater, Prairie View A&M University, or until a memorial is built in a city park. Bland, 28, was a Chicago-area African-American motorist, pulled over on July 10 by state highway patrol trooper Brian Encinia for a minor traffic violation. Her exchange with Trooper Encinia got heated when he asked her to put out her cigarette and Bland was arrested for allegedly assaulting a public servant. While in a cell in the Waller County jail, official reports say she committed suicide by hanging days later.
