"Scandal" Season Two Finale Event

The creator of ABC’s “Grey’s Anatomy” is explaining why she killed off one of the show’s most beloved characters last season.  In a panel discussion at the Television Critics Association’s press tour on Tuesday, Shonda Rhimes said she had to kill off Patrick Dempsey’s character Derek “McDreamy” Sheppard to keep the integrity of his relationship alive.  Dempsey’s character was married to Meredith Grey, played by Ellen Pompeo, but died after a car crash in season 11.  Rhimes says she couldn’t allow Derek to be viewed as a bad guy who left his wife and child, but admits it was “painful” to kill off the character.

Rhimes also addressed the upcoming seasons of her other two ABC Thursday night dramas, “Scandal” and “How To Get Away With Murder,” during the panel.  The trio of hits will return for another season on September 24th.
