Will Smith and Jay Z are joining forces with Jay Brown, James Lassiter, and Aaron Kaplan as executive producers on an untitled miniseries about Emmett Till for HBO, according to reports.

Emmett Till was a 14-year-old boy from Chicago, who was kidnapped, tortured, and brutally murdered in 1955 while visiting family in Mississippi, by a group of White men. The motive for the murder was that Till was allegedly caught whistling at a White woman.

Till’s mother chose to have an open-casket funeral to show the savage consequences that racism had on her son. Till’s killers were acquitted of the murder despite publicly admitting responsibility later on. The Till case was a major catalyst in jump starting the Civil Rights Era.

There have been other documentaries about Emmett Till in the past, but given current events and racial tension in the United States, another one couldn’t hurt. There are unfortunately a lot of people who still don’t know their history.

The miniseries is not yet titled.
