Will A 'Dog Fight' Ensue In The SC State House Over The Confederate Flag?

Take down that flag!…the movement…the hashtag…the pressuring of lawmakers. It has worked. The Confederate flag is no longer flying outside the South Carolina state capitol building. Thousands have gathered as the flag has been lowered and rolled in a ceremony. No one spoke at the ceremony. However what was heard were the cheers of the crowd as the flag was cranked down. At a bill signing ceremony Thursday, Republican Governor Nikki Haley said the flag would come down with dignity at 10:00 this morning Eastern time. Long the subject of controversy and pain–usually outvoted by “Southern Pride,” calls for its removal increased last month after the murders of nine African Americans at historic “Mother” Emanuel A.M.E. Church in Charleston. Among the nine was the pastor of the church, Reverend Clementa Pinckney. Pinckney was also a South Carolina state senator. Several members of the families of the victims, now known as the “Emanuel Nine” were present at today’s ceremony. The flag was taken to a military museum.

Despite today’s historic move, the Confederate flag still lives on in other southern states. Its emblem is still a part of the state flag of Mississippi. Expect the fight to remove it to move to Mississippi next.
