Monounsaturated Fats

Since we already know that “food is medicine,” and that “fat is our friend,” I wanted to swing by and tell you that if olive oil is the only oil you fool with, then it is time for an oil change beauties.

In fact, recent news has reported that there may be a shortage of this popular Mediterranean staple in the near future. 2014 was olive oils worst year ever.

“In Andalusia, Spain, a drought ruined the olive harvest; in Italy, olive trees in Puglia were ravaged by a bacteria called Xylella fastidiosa; while in Tuscany, millions of olives were destroyed by pesky fruit flies.” (Source: Quartz)

So since the supply is scarce the cost for consumers can become scary high soon. With that said beauties, if the price isn’t right on your favorite olive oil at your local farmer’s market or grocery store, then let’s tag in some other slick picks.

Sesame Oil

Come on over to sesame oil street ladies! This seed-extracted oil helps ward off diabetes and thwarts cavities. How so? Well the RAD antioxidants that are packed in sesame oil, coupled with compounds called lignans have been said to help control blood sugar as well as lower LDL cholesterol (bad cholesterol). So next time you serve up a stir fry mix your veggies in some unrefined toasted sesame oil. Just be sure to keep the temperature on low to medium so you don’t burn this delicate oil up.

Avocado Oil

From a fresh face to fresh food, this silky fruit oil helps fight joint conditions and promotes soft healthy skin. Just like olive oil, avocado oil is packing in the anti-inflammatory department due to it’s monounsaturated fatty acids (MUFA’s). These babies help protect your skin from free radicals and if you eat it on the regular avocado oil can even act like a tiny dose of natural ibuprofen. But here’s the deal, it’s expensive sis. So if your budget won’t allow the splurge then just eat more actual avocados.

Walnut Oil

Also known as the new fish oil, walnut oil can help improve your body’s reaction to stress (sans the after taste that fish oil has). So instead of mentally checking out, check in with this rich in omega-3 fatty acid. It’s particular kind is alpha linolenic acid (ALA) and these bad boys serve as building blocks for the healthy fats that help regulate our immune and nervous systems. And if that is not enough, walnut oil helps protect your heart by keeping your blood pressure levels in check. Quick tip though ladies, this oil can’t stand heat, so store it in your fridge and serve it cold over salads or pasta.

Coconut Oil

Let’s go loco with the coco. This antioxidant-rich oil literally has unlimited potential, eating it will make you feel like a rockstar just like slathering it on your skin makes you look like a movie star. Where does all this star power come from? Lauric acids and saturated fatty acids called medium-chain triglycerides (MCT’s), that’s where. So swallow two to three tablespoons (max) per day, throw some in a smoothie or cook with it when high temperatures are needed. Your cholesterol levels, digestion and belly fat will appreciate it.
