A pair of award-winning film-makers are leading a Black Friday boycott of retailers to show solidarity with Ferguson protesters. “Selma” director Ava DuVernay and Ryan Coogler are urging people not to shop today as a way to show support for civil rights in America. Coogler, the 2013 Cannes award-winning director of “Fruitvale Station,” came up with the idea for the nationwide movement. Word of the campaign quickly gained momentum using the hashtag #BlackOutBlackFriday on Twitter.
Coogler’s “Fruitvale Station” tells the tale of a Oscar Grant, an unarmed, young African American man shot to death by a San Francisco area transit officer on New Year’s Day 2009.
