Back in the 90s, there was no greater rite of passage than choosing sides and reciting the lyrics to the Rodney Jerkins-produced female anthem “The Boy Is Mine.”

“You be Brandy and I’ll be Monica,” (I was totally a Monica type of chick) is sort of how the conversation would go and then — cue the theatrics — eye rolls, hair flips and major neck action while lip syncing along to the brilliant lyrics. “You need to give it up/ had about enough/ it’s not hard to see, the boy is mine.” Sigh. The soundtrack to every teenage fantasy.

Back then, Brandy and Monica were the sh*t and if you were apart of that golden era, they still are. To give a little context, “The Boy Is Mine” spent 13 weeks on top of the US Billboard Hot 100 during the summer of 1998. It also won a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group. Epic right?

Earlier today, Rodney “Darkchild” revealed that he planned on recreating the pop single with newcomers Ariana Grande and Jessie J and we cringed. Hey White people, ‘You can not have ‘The Boy Is Mine.” Ab-so-lute-ly not! Have a seat over there with the newly-married White couple who columbused “jumping the broom.”

Our feelings can pretty much be summed up with this vine:
