Poetry by the late Maya Angelou is taking a musical twist on the new album, “Caged Bird Songs.” Released this week, the posthumous album features Angelou singing and rapping some of her most memorable verses such as “Still I Rise.”
The 13-track album was created by Az Yet singer Shawn Rivera, and was released under the label Smooch Music. Rivera tells “Billboard” he hopes the album brings Angelou’s poetry to the ears of a new audience. In making the album, Rivera used older recordings of her poetry, as well as newer vocals that were recorded before her death in May. The project has even caught the ears of Angelou’s friend Oprah Winfrey. She’s co-producing a video set to the track “Harlem Hopscotch” that will premiere on her OWN network later this month.
