Remember that Angela Bassett film where her daughter went off to compete in the world famous spelling bee, “Akeelah and the Bee?” Well, a 13-year-old Carmel girl is heading to Washington DC to compete in that same competition, the Scripps National Spelling Bee. She’s Alekhya Ankaraju and she’s one of 14 Hoosiers in the competition this year. Computer-based preliminary tests start Tuesday and Round Two of the preliminaries begin on Wednesday.
