The First Lady Hosts Women In Soul Music Workshop And Performance At White House

Barack Obama paid tribute to the Queen of Soul, Aretha Franklin and a host of other female singers during a special Women of Soul tribute at the White House in Washington, D.C. Last night (3/6).

“When Aretha first told us what R-S-P-E-C-T meant to her,” he began, causing the crowd to laugh. “She had no idea it would become a rallying cry for African Americans and women and anyone else who felt marginalized because of what they looked like, who they loved. They wanted some respect.”

The full concert will air on PBS on April 7.
