Speedway High School Student Killed

Speedway High School is mourning the loss of one of its students. Sixteen-year-old Sayyid Abdul-Haqq was the person found shot to death Wednesday night in the International Village Apartments. He lived there with his brother. Speedway school officials say he was a good student who could usually be found the school library or the Speedway Public Library.

Rural Church Going Up in Fames on Friday

Multiple crews are on-site at a massive Friday morning church fire in Putnam County. Crews from Putnam County and 12 other nearby fire departments are battling this blaze which was reported just before 5 a.m. The church is the Lifespring Church, located just north of Greencastle. Fire departments are trucking in water to fight this huge rural fire from miles around.

Mother, Child Killed In House Fire

A mother and her young daughter are dead following a house fire on Indy’s east side. Investigators say the blaze broke out Thursday morning, but they aren’t sure yet what started it. The home had a smoke detector, but the battery had been pulled out.

IU Student Accused Of Trying To Make Bombs

Another college student is in trouble with the law. Twenty-year-old Ryder Pickens, a student at IU-Bloomington stands accused of trying to make bombs in his bedroom. He’s now facing felony charges. Pickens’ roommate called police and told them about his roomie’s chemicals and laboratory equipment on January 16th. Pickens was taken to IU Health Bloomington Hospital at that time for “an immediate detention”. On Wednesday, police took him into custody after investigators found website queries on his computer for “weapons of mass destruction, effects of sarin gas, Agent Blue and the chemical components for Agent Orange.”

Marion County Deputy Facing Felony Counts

Marion County Sheriff’s deputy, David A. Clemmons, was arrested Thursday and stands accused of exploiting an adult dependent. Authorities say the crimes occurred between 2005 and 2007. Clemmons is on unpaid administrative leave as the investigation continues.

Governor Fires Up Supporters Of Gay Marriage Ban

Governor Mike Pence is providing moral support of the same-sex marriage ban. He spoke Thursday to 400 church and community leaders endorsing the constitutional amendment. Pence approves of traditional marriage and hopes lawmakers will approve the controversial measure moving through the state House.

Three Dead In Multi-Vehicle Crash

At least three people are dead after a crash involving 30 vehicles near Michigan City. The accident happened Thursday on snowy Eastbound Interstate 94 and involved 15 semis and at least 30 cars. The dead are reported as a Chicago man and a couple from Michigan. Indiana State Police Sergeant Ann Wojas also said up to 30 people are injured. Icy conditions and low visibility are blamed for the massive pile-up.

Indiana Among Best Traffic Law States

Indiana is high on the list of states with the best traffic laws.  A report from Advocates for Highway and Auto Safety shows the Hoosier State is among the top ten passing laws to promote road safety.  The state received the group’s top rating of green for laws regarding drunk drivers, cell phone restrictions, and other factors.

George Starts for NBA All-Star Eastern Conference Team

The Eastern and Western Conference starting lineups have been announced and the Pacers are in the house, thanks to the fans. For the East, Pacers forward Paul George will be joined by LeBron James of the Heat and Carmelo Anthony of the Knicks. The guards are Kyrie Irving of the Cavs and Dwyane Wade of the Heat. The game will be played February 16 in New Orleans. Pacers coach Frank Vogel will be on the sideline for the East. The announcement came on TNT’s “Inside the NBA” on Thursday. By the way, the Pacers take on the Kings on the road Friday night in Sacramento.

More Accolades and Opportunities for Paul George

USA Basketball announced its 28-player pool for the next three summers and among them is Indiana forward, Paul George. Eleven players from the 2012 Olympic team that won the gold are back. All 28 players will have an opportunity to compete for the 12-man Olympic squad that will go for gold in the 2016 Summer Games in Rio de Janeiro. The first time you can catch them in action is this August at the FIB World Championships in Spain.
