PR Executive Justine Sacco was headed to Africa Friday night. But before taking off, she foolishly tweeted, “Going to Africa. Hope I don’t get AIDS. Just kidding. I’m white!”
By the time she landed, her Twitter, Instagram (which have both been deleted)and voicemail box were flooded. She had no idea she was a trending topic on Twitter for hours, including #HasJustineLandedYet with people who were furious over her tweet. Since then, she has issued an apology but was fired.
The Urban Daily reports:
In a written statement, Sacco apologized “for being insensitive to this crisis — which does not discriminate by race, gender or sexual orientation, but which terrifies us all uniformly — and to the millions of people living with the virus, I am ashamed.”
