Looks like Oprah is the newest passenger on the natural hair bandwagon! The Queen of All Media decided to grace the September 2012 cover of O magazine in all her au naturale glory.

Dressed in an embellished Badgley Mischka dress, Alexis Bittar earrings and a Jordan Alexander ring, Oprah looks thrilled to be showing of her marvelous mane. The dramatic look marks the first time the 58-year-old has ditched her straightened tresses for the publication’s cover. That’s more than 12 years of covers, and roughly 144 issues, since Oprah serves as the glossy’s permanent covergirl. In this September’s “What I Know For Sure” column, Oprah tackles the hot topic of natural hair by opening up about her personal hair journey, rocking her hair natural on weekends/vacations and what role it plays in the expression of “self.” You know Oprah always has to have an “Aha!” moment — even when it comes to hair.

One of those moments came courtesy of funnyman Bill Cosby. Oprah writes about wanting to chop off all her hair and wear it super short like Camille Cosby, Bill’s lovely wife. But she says she quickly abandoned the idea after Bill told her: “Don’t do it. You’ve got the wrong head shape and you’ll disappoint yourself.”

Ouch! That’s gotta hurt. But we’re glad Oprah took his advice — if she hadn’t, we wouldn’t be able to bask in her full follicle look on September’s O cover.

The issue hits newsstands Aug. 7. In the meantime, check out how Oprah took her hair to new heights on the upcoming cover, and take a look at her amazing style evolution in the slideshow below.
