It has been 43 years since the John Carlos and Tommie Smith won the bronze medal at the Summer Olympics in 1968 and made his black power salute that sparked political controversy.

Today, John Carlos is promoting his new memoir titled, The John Carlos Story: The Sports Moment that Changed the World, written by Dr. John Carlos with Dave Zirin

Carlos says that the iconic salute “evolved from a two-year span from the initial attempted boycott up to the time we took the vote… we thought it was necessary to still make a statement.”

Getting on the stand was a crucial part of making Carlos’ statement. He had to win the bronze medal and Tommy had to win the gold.

“It was just a matter of making sure everybody was on the victory stand that was supposed to be there,” says Carlos
