It’s never too early to start whetting your appetite for the Indiana State Fair, Aug. 5-21. Among the high-calorie highlights:

Deep-fried Kool-Aid balls: These are the standouts for this year’s fair for sheer curiosity, and they look sorta like pink, greasy doughnut holes dusted (coated?) in powdered sugar.

Ice cream burger: This one looks the best — an ooey-gooey burger topped with cinnamon and corn flakes-crusted ice cream. It’s got “I sound terrible, but there’s something that happens with this combination that makes cold crisp magic love on your taste buds” written all over it.

French toast hamburger: Meh? This one’s for those looking to step slightly out of their corndog-on-a-stick comfort zone. It’s a burger between two pieces of french toast.

Chicken Eggo: The spunky sleeper hit — it doesn’t have the sexy charm that the Kool-Aid balls have, but it’s definitely more interesting. It’s a piece of chicken fried in Cap’n Crunch, stuffed between two waffles and topped with all the fixings.

Deep-fried Klondike bar: Dipped in batter, fried in hot oil and, of course, spattered with powdered sugar. I’d do a lot for this thing, jus’ saying.
