25 Reasons We Love “A Different World”

Started in 2007, the Dreamers Academy allows teens to participate in “immersion workshops” that provide insight into real-world careers; counseling and mentoring sessions; and a pep-rally breakfast of recognition and encouragement.

Out of the 110 teenagers who gathered inside an Epcot ballroom Sunday, many wanted to be singers, actors, rappers and celebrities. But they come from poor or disadvantaged families, from neighborhoods of crime, drugs and violence, from parents struggling with unemployment, addiction, divorce and incarceration.

Alongside Steve Harvey and Essence magazine editor Mikki Taylor, Raven-Symone told the teens, “Celebrity lights always dim. ‘Iconic’ is timeless.”
