Chicago News Cooperative is reporting that Carol Moseley Braun apologized Tuesday for accusing rival mayoral candidate Patricia Van Pelt-Watkins of being “strung out on crack.”
“Patricia Watkins said she does not expect an apology from me. She is wrong,” Braun said, reading from a statement in a news conference at a West Side church.
Flanked by U.S. Reps. Danny Davis and Bobby Rush, the former U.S. Senator said she also “meant no disrespect” to the churches where she clashed Sunday with Watkins and her supporters.
Braun added that she wanted to “extend my support” to families suffering from illegal drug use.
Asked if she spoke with Watkins to apologize, Braun declined to say: “My words today speak for themselves.”
When a reporter said the incident raised questions about her temperament, Braun replied, “It’s a campaign, and unfortunately campaigns get overheated.”
